Cardinal de Richelieu is often referred to by the titles “Chief Minister” of the King or “First Minister”. As a result, he is considered the world’s first Prime Minister in the modern sense of the term. He sought to consolidate the king’s power and eliminate domestic factions. By retaining his royal power, he turned France into a powerful centralized state.

Its main foreign policy objectives were to control the power of the Austro-Spanish Habsburg dynasty, and to ensure French dominance in the Thirty Years’ War. Although he was a cardinal, he did not hesitate to form alliances with Protestant leaders to achieve this goal. His reign was marked by the Thirty Years’ War that swept through Europe.

Richelieu is also known for his love of art; he founded the Académie Française, a scholarly foundation in charge of dealing with matters related to the French language. Richelieu is also known for his sobriquet, l’Éminence rouge (“Red Greatness”), of the red color of his clerical attire and his “grandmother” style as a cardinal.
